CIRCUIT BREAKER CREDIT
The "Circuit Breaker Credit" is a real estate tax credit for certain persons age 65 and older. Taxpayers age 65 or older may be eligible to claim a refundable credit on their state income taxes for the real estate taxes paid during the tax year on the residential property they own or rent in Massachusetts that is used as their principal residence.
You may qualify if your principal residence assessed value is not more than $793,000 or if you rent housing that is not federally or state subsidized. This credit, up to $930.00, is triggered when your real estate tax paid is more than 10% of your total income or when 25% of your yearly rental payments are more than 10% of your total income.
Income limits also apply, single individuals cannot make more than $49,000 per year and married individuals cannot make more than $74,000.
House assessed value and income guidelines may change from year to year.
The Taunton Senior Center provides space for the AARP volunteers to prepare seniors income tax returns and coordinates the appointments. The Taunton Senior Center also schedules an annual presentation to review the guidelines for eligibility for the "Circuit Breaker Credit".
