Road Construction & Utility Work

NThere are a number of ongoing projects happening throughout the City.  Many of the current improvements are critical to Taunton's aging infrastructure and are a sign of progression.  The information on this page is meant to help residents and visitors carry out daily activities and avoid traffic during times of high construction and road work.  If you have any questions pertaining to the projects taking place, please call the Department of Public Works at 508-821-1431.  Please use caution as the Department of Public Works will be patching potholes when weather allows.  To report a public works issue, check out the City's See Click Fix Application.

MA DOT / State Jurisdiction

Rt. 138 (Broadway from Leonard St. - Purchase St.) - MA DOT Contractors will continue Phase 1 of the SMMPO TIP Project with sidewalk reconstruction scheduled from the intersection of Washington to Purchase.  The project consists of full depth reconstruction; traffic signal upgrades at the intersections of Washington Street and Purchase Street; 11-foot travel lane and minimum 5-foot bicycle lane in both directions; new cement concrete sidewalk along the corridor; new wheelchair ramps with detectable warning panels; crosswalks across all intersecting side streets; improvements to the existing drainage system; and new pavement markings and signs. Bicycle accommodations consisting of bicycle lanes and buffered bicycle lanes are provided in accordance with applicable design guides.

Rt. 138 (Raynham) - Starting Monday, March 7, 2022 MA DOT Contractors will be saw cutting the roadway for test pits and drainage work along Rt. 138 in Raynham Monday through Friday 7A - 3:30P.  Tree removal will begin starting Monday, March 28, 2022 from King Philip St. heading northbound.  Beginning April 11, 2022, MA DOT will be continuing drainage work between King Philip St and Britton St. and test pits north of I-495.  Starting, October 24, 2022 contractors will begin road milling and resurfacing.  Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. All scheduled work is weather dependent and/or may be impacted due to an emergency situation.

Rt. 140/ Rt. 24 (bridge replacement) - MA DOT Contractors will have on-going bridge replacement, signal and wall structure work at Rt. 24 exit 12 Rt. 140 intersection. Starting Friday night, September 23, 2022 MA DOT will begin Stage 1B work which includes full depth construction and widening along Rt. 24 northbound, widening of Rt. 140 northbound, and construction of new ramps and structural walls. Work for this project may vary depending on the type of work being done and will be in shifts from 7A - 3:30P and 8P - 5A. There will be signage and police details on site to aid traffic flow. This project is expected to be on-going until completion anticipated for June 2027. For further information about this project, please visit

Rt. 140 - MBTA Contractors will begin sidewalk installation and have on-going work on the shoulder of Route 140 (County Street) on the southbound side between Taunton Depot Drive and Mozzone Boulevard.  Work is scheduled to begin Monday, October 24, 2022 from 7A - 3:30P and will be on going as installation moves forward.
