Office Responsibilities

Boat Excise Tax
All water craft vessels, including documented boats and ships, used or capable of being used for transportation on water (includes all equipment, furnishings, mod of power, etc.) shall be assessed an excise tax for the privilege of using the waterways.

Cash & Investments
The Treasurer possesses sole responsibility to pay the bills of the City and must make such payments in strict accordance with the General Laws.

Debt Management
Debt Management provides reports to the Mayor and City Council on the City's debt position.

Motor Vehicle Excise Tax
Motor Vehicle Excise Tax bills are issued each calendar year to each owner of a vehicle registered in Massachusetts.

Payroll Administration
The Treasurer is responsible for the administration, withholding and disbursement of all payroll checks and withholding liabilities in compliance with Federal and State laws (inclusive of IRS and DOR regulations) and local contracts.

Personal Property Tax
Personal property generally includes tangible items that are not firmly attached to land or buildings and are not specially designed for or of such a size and bulk to be considered part of the real estate.

Real Estate Tax
As stated in M.G.L. CH 60, Section 3, cities and towns must send a bill to the owner of record as of January 1 of the year in which the tax was assessed.

Tax Title
The City of Taunton secures its right to unpaid property taxes through a tax lien process.

Water Sewer Bills
Water and sewer bills are issued to each household and commercial consumer in the City of Taunton.
