Early Voting/Absentee Voting by Mail

All registered voters qualify for a Vote by Mail Ballot for the 2022 elections.

The Primary Election will be held on September 6 and the State Election will be held on November 8.

How do I receive a Vote by Mail Ballot?


An application must be completed for a Vote by Mail ballot to be mailed to you. All registered voters who have not already applied to receive a ballot will be mailed a post card application in mid-July. The postcards will be sent by the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s office and will be postage pre-paid.

The completed, signed application can be returned to us in person, by mailing it to our office, or by scanning and emailing the application to: elections@taunton-ma.gov

How do I receive an Absentee Ballot?

Most voters do not qualify to receive an absentee ballot to be sent to them.

Massachusetts allows voters that QUALIFY to vote by absentee ballot if the voter is one of the following:

  • Will be absent from your city or town on Election Day
  • Has a physical disability that prevents voting at the polling place
  • Cannot vote at the polls due to religious beliefs

What is the deadline to apply for an Absentee/Vote by Mail Ballot?

Absentee and Vote by Mail ballots must be requested in writing by 5:00 pm on the 5th business day before Election Day

  • For the September 6 Primary-deadline to submit is August 29th
  • For the November 8 Election- deadline to submit is November 1st

Please note: When applying for a Primary Ballot:

If you’re applying for a primary ballot, and you are an unenrolled voter (commonly called “Independent”) or enrolled in political designations, you are allowed to vote in the party primary of your choice. You must indicate which party’s ballot you want to receive. If you don’t provide a party on your application, you will not receive a primary ballot. Your ballot choice will not affect your party registration.

How long will it take me to receive my ballot?

Ballots are typically available for mailing 2-3 weeks prior to the election. Ballots can only be mailed- we are not permitted to allow ballots to be picked up.

Please apply early to allow ample time for the processing of your application and for the postal services to deliver your ballot to you.

How should I return my completed Vote by Mail or Absentee ballot?

Ballots can NOT be returned to the polling location on Election Day. They must be returned to the Elections Department for processing and then will be delivered, by the Election Department staff, to the polls on Election Day.

  • Ballots can be hand delivered to the Elections Department
  • Ballots can be deposited in the drop box located outside of City Hall, Riverside Entrance

The following deadlines apply:

For September 6 Primary-

  • Ballots must be received by the Elections Department office by 8:00 PM on Election Day

For November 8th State Election

  • Ballots returned in person or via drop box must be received in the Elections Department office by 8 PM on Election Day
  • Ballots returned via mail must be postmarked by November 8th and received by the Elections Department office by 5:00 pm on November 12th.
