[ARCHIVED] South Coast Rail Advisory

SCR Advisory

The South Coast Rail (SCR) team, along with freight operator Mass Coastal Railroad (MCRR), would like to advise municipalities that speeds up to 25 mph will now be permitted on the Middleborough Secondary, Fall River Secondary and New Bedford Main Lines.

As of Monday, October 3, the speed limit for freight trains at locations along these lines has increased from 10 mph to 25 mph. Trains will slow to 10 mph at all railroad crossings. This Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved change is possible due to the recent upgrades to the track by the SCR Project and MCRR that allow for greater speeds and efficiency.

With these increased freight speeds, it is important to emphasize railroad safety, and that trespassing on the tracks is illegal - no unauthorized person should be on the railroad right-of-way at any time.

Send inquiries to the South Coast Rail project team at SouthCoastRail@dot.state.ma.us or to the Mass Coastal Railroad Team at info@masscoastal.com.
