In prior years the City of Taunton has accepted shredded paper as a collected recyclable material, but going forward shredded paper is no longer an acceptable material at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Materials like shredded paper, plastic bags, garden hoses, etc. tangle and clog the MRF's sorting machinery hindering recycling operations. Primarily because of its size, shredded paper is often too small to be properly captured and baled with other fiber materials at the facility. Some suggest shredded paper as an additive to composting.
The City of Taunton's recycled materials collected through the curbside program are transported to and processed at a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
Materials are unloaded, sorted by material, and bundled for marketing (resale)
City of Taunton residents currently participating in the City's curbside Solid Waste and Recycling program will be given one 95-gallon recycling cart, per residence, free of charge. Taunton residents living in multi-unit residences (2-family, 3-family, 4-family only), will receive one cart per unit. For example, if you live in a 4-family, there will be four carts provided.
Taunton residents participating in the program who are interested in purchasing additional recycle cart(s) can do so online through the City's online payment system City Hall systems or at the Department of Public Works at 90 Ingell Street.
