How can I check my house for leaks?

Residents are responsible for any water leaks from the curb stop into the home.  Having a plumber assess older utilities can help prevent unaccounted for water loss.   A leaky toilet is one of the largest causes of wasted water, often resulting in high consumption and water bills for residents.  Listening for a hissing sound or the sound of running water flowing through when not in use should highlight obvious issues or leaks.  Residents can also add 10 to 12 drops of food coloring into the toilet tank, wait 15 to 30 minutes and if coloring is noticed in the toilet bowl it is recommended that the flapper valve be replaced.
